Description:
Otherwise known as the Plaza de la Constitución, the Zócalo is the main square in the Centro Histórico district. It's full of historic sights and ancient architecture. The area is always alive with people and it's the center for parades, ceremonies and celebrations on holidays and other special events. The north side of the Zócalo holds the Catedral Metropolitana, constructed in 1573, and boasting a Baroque interior. The ruins of the ancient Templo Mayor stand near the cathedral, while the eastern end of this prominent square holds the Palacio Nacional, home to the Federal Treasury and National Archives. A short walk west brings you to the Museo Nacional de Arte.
